Some fears such as death or danger are important to
our survival as human beings and are necessary. Others
such as the fear of being bitten by a dog generally
has its roots in an actual similar event. Once the fear
interferes with the persons ability to rationally cope
with their environment, it then becomes a phobia.
Sometimes the fear can be accompanied by a physiological
change in the persons body that tends to heighten the
fear reaction and then in turn cause the mind to develop
a phobia. For example, going to the dentist already
being afraid of the impending experience and possible
pain and not eating properly causing the blood sugars
to drop drastically just at the moment the experience
is reaching its peak. The sugar drop translates into
a physiologically induced anxiety attack and from then
on due to the Law of Association, the client is forever
afraid of dentists. Result: Dentophobia
Most fears as opposed to phobias occur in childhood
and are usually grown out of. some people however do
carry them into their adult lives. Usually the cause
is known. Phobias on the other hand develop in adulthood
and the cause is usually vague. If the cause is known
and it is a fear and not a phobia, we recommend the
use of circle therapy. Phobias work better with what
we call systematic desensitization. With circle therapy
We have the client repeatedly face the cause and then
relax until eventually the cause is eliminated and the
relaxed state takes over. Because circle therapy is
dealing with the actual cause we recommend this only
if the cause is certain and taking the client back to
it will do no harm.
